PHILADELPHIA, PA –Chestnut Hill College will host the poverty simulation, “Living on the Edge” on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. in Redmond Room, St. Joseph Hall. Sponsored by Kappa Delta Epsilon Honor Society and the Education Department, the event aims to increase awareness and promote social justice for the poor. The event is also co-sponsored by Student Activities, the Student Government Association, the Service Learning program, and the Criminal Justice, Religious Studies, and Psy.D. programs at the College.  
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chestnut Hill College will host a workshop on “An Overview of Trauma Informed Care” for The Soldiers Project Pennsylvania on Thursday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall.   This workshop will guide participants in their overall understanding of basic principles of psychotherapy with trauma survivors and the application of a stage-based mode. Techniques and tools for intervening with trauma survivors will be emphasized. Therapist self-care will also be addressed. 
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chestnut Hill College will host the annual reception and lecture for Fonkoze, Haiti’s largest microfinance institution, on Wednesday, October 30 at 6 p.m. in the Redmond Room, St. Joseph Hall. Gauthier Dieudonné, director of Fonkoze’s Chemen Lavi Miyò (CLM) program, and Laurence Camille, director of education, will present the lecture “Moving Forward… What is Working in Haiti.” 
CALL FOR PAPERS: Proposals for presentations or artwork are invited on any topic related to the Harry Potter series for “The Harry Potter Conference: Reflections on the Major Themes in J.K. Rowling's Literature” taking place October 18 from 3-5 p.m. in the Rotunda of St. Joseph Hall. Individuals interested in presenting should submit a 200 word abstract on their topic, artwork, or performance to the conference coordinators. Abstracts from students and faculty will be considered. Participants with accepted abstracts will be allowed 10 minutes for presentation at the conference.
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Debra Lawrence, Ph.D. assistant professor of education recently published a new book, “How Public Investment Contributes to Quality Early Childhood Programs: Lessons from Pennsylvania, US” (Scholars’ Press, 2013) Dr. Lawrence also contributed two chapters to another publication, “Learning from Head Start: A Teacher’s Guide to School Readiness”(R&L Education, 2013). 
PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Division of Teacher Education and Leadership at Chestnut Hill College is proud to announce partnerships with three local schools in the community to provide field experiences for students before student teaching. Enfield Elementary School in Springfield Township, Fort Washington Elementary School in Upper Dublin Township, and J.S. Jenks School in Chestnut Hill have opened their doors to accept Chestnut Hill teacher candidates and have assigned teacher mentors to support their growth. 
PHILADELPHIA, PA- Chestnut Hill College will host its second annual academic conference on “Harry Potter: Reflections on the Major Themes in J.K. Rowling's Literature" on Friday, October 18, from 3-5 p.m. in the Rotunda, St. Joseph Hall.  The conference is an academic outlet for students, faculty and other scholars to present papers, research, or art related to the Harry Potter book series. This conference brings a scholarly component to the Harry Potter Weekend and the College’s Philadelphia Brotherly Love Quidditch Cup Tournament. 
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chestnut Hill College will hold its 31st Annual Golf Invitational on Monday, October 14th at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa.   For three decades, the Chestnut Hill College Golf Invitational has played host to hundreds of the region's top business associates and community leaders. In that time, the Invitational has raised nearly $1 million in support of Chestnut Hill College. The day provides an excellent opportunity for professional networking while supporting some of Chestnut Hill’s brightest scholar-athletes.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Rev. Frank Haig, S.J., Ph.D., professor emeritus of physics at Loyola University, Maryland and Scott Engle, Ph.D., adjunct professor of astronomy at Villanova University and Chestnut Hill College present the lecture, “Red Dwarf Stars and Little Green People?” on Wednesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. at the Commonwealth Chateau, SugarLoaf Hill campus. This lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Religion and Science at Chestnut Hill College. 
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Cheryl Heatwole Shenk, a graduate student at the College pursuing a master of education in early childhood education and an early childhood Montessori certification, was awarded one of five, $1,500 Hannah Amgott Memorial Scholarships from the Delaware Valley Education Consortium (DVEC). 
Dr. Suzanne del Gizzo, an eighth-year Chestnut Hill College English professor, was named editor-elect of The Hemingway Review at the society’s annual board conference in late May. She follows the work of Suzanne Beegel, who retired in July after 22 years as editor. The Hemingway Review is the premier scholarship journal of the Ernest Hemingway Society, dedicated to promoting further study and specialized analysis into the life and work of one of America’s most revered novelists.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Nobel Laureate Michael S. Brown, M.D., the W.A. (Monty) Moncrief Distinguished Chair in Cholesterol and Arteriosclerosis Research, Regental Professor; Paul J. Thomas Chair in Medicine and Director of the Jonsson Center for Molecular Geneticsat the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School will present the keynote lecture, “Why Hearts Attack” at the 20th Anniversary Biomedical Lecture Series on Wednesday, September 11, at 3:30 p.m. in the East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall.  
PHILADELPHIA, PA – According to The Princeton Review, Chestnut Hill College was named one of 226 institutions to its "Best in the Northeast" section of its Web site feature, "2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region." The feature, posted at http://www.princetonreview.com/best-regional-colleges.aspx, identifies schools that are recommended as "regional bests" across four locales: the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and West. In total, 643 schools received this designation by The Princeton Review.
Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., president of Chestnut Hill College, announced today that The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) reaffirmed the College’s accreditation for the next ten years. The College’s next Periodic Review Report will be due November 1, 2018.

Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching has co-authored a book on academic empowerment for new students entering college. "From Angst to Empowerment: Strategic Planning for Collegiate and Academic Success" (Pacific Crest, 2012), co-authored with biology faculty member Barbara Giuliano, Ed.D. ’72, is a guidebook for students who are just beginning their academic career and provides a clear, concise path to achieve success in the college classroom.
