I am pleased to share this first edition of our new “From the President’s Desk” electronic newsletter. With so much exciting work happening throughout the Chestnut Hill College community, I wanted to create a communication to share important news and celebrate our collective successes. You can expect to receive a new edition every two weeks covering a wide gamut of CHC-related topics.

To kick things off, this first edition will serve to recap some of the numerous highlights from the previous year.

Chestnut Hill College, A Year in Review

Admissions, Enrollment, and Student Success

  • Deposits of First-Time Full-Time Freshman (freshmen entering class Fall 2023 vs 2022) increased by 21% year-over-year. AADP-Adult Learners increased by 12% year-over-year, representing a five-year high.
  • Financial aid forms submitted by new applicants increased by 49% representing an eight-year high, and financial aid packages sent to accepted freshman and transfer students increased by 42% representing a six-year high.

  • Led by Laura Sibbald, enrollment increased in the Neurodiversity College Program from Fall 22 to Fall 2023 by 300% from six freshman entering in 2022 to 18 freshmen entering in 2023.
     
  • Led by Dr. Krista Murphy, the College initiated and successfully implemented the Student Success Initiative that produced a 4% increase in Fall 2022 to Spring 2023 registrations.
     
  • A new Student Ambassador Program to the President was established, and will continue this year.

Around Campus: People, Places, and Policies

  • In addition to planned equipment and dining hall upgrades, $500,000 unrestricted cash donation to Chestnut Hill College was negotiated as part of the new Chartwell’s food service contract.
     
  • In early September, Starbucks officially opened in McCaffery Lounge.
     
  • . Jordan Campbell was recently hired as our Coordinator of Athletic Health and Wellness funded by an NCAA grant awarded to Chestnut Hill College, making CHC one of only two schools in the CACC with this positionRead more from Griffin Athletics.

  • Following newly codified policies and procedures with helpful assistance from Board member Ron Zemnick, one floor of Fournier Residence Hall was renovated along with necessary repairs to the Fournier Hall roof.
  • A new turf field area was installed in the athletic weight room.
     
  • A new Maternity Leave Policy was implemented for all staff and administrators.

Partnerships, Programming, and Griffins in the Community

  • Over the Easter celebration of 2023, we rapidly negotiated a successful contract that provided a safe haven to roughly 340 of Our Mother of Consolation Pre-K through 8th grade students along with faculty and staff. Plans are underway for CHC students and faculty to work with OMC teachers and students as collaborators and mentors. 
     
  • Dr. Latimer and State Representatives Chris Rabb and Tarik Khan held a special ceremony honoring Chestnut Hill College for the extraordinary efforts put into place to ensure Our Mother of Consolation Parish School has a home for a rich, in-person learning experience following the devastating school fire.

They discussed new opportunities for expanding already excellent collaboration between Chestnut Hill College and Rabb's District, including enhancing experiential learning opportunities for students. Additionally, we are grateful that Representative Rabb will be joining as a guest on Latimer's Public Health America program this fall.

  • For the first time in College history, a Chestnut Hill College staff member was invited to serve as a Member of  the Chestnut Hill Community Association Board.

Academic Excellence and Strengthening the College's Financial Foundation
  • Our finance team, working in collaboration with stakeholders across campus, achieved a balanced budget for Fiscal Years 2023 and 2024.
     
  • The budget process for Fiscal Year 2024 started four months earlier than in previous years, allowing departments to have much better planning for the academic year in addition to providing the Board with a significantly improved timeline to review and provide feedback on the budget.
  • Nursing Programs were approved by the Faculty Senate and Board. Led by Dr. Susan Apold in collaboration with many faculty and staff, more than 17 MOUs have been secured with hospitals and community-based health care agencies who will be providing clinical placements to Chestnut Hill College nursing students once the program kicks off in fall of 2025.

Looking Forward - Inauguration Week Community Celebration

This week, the entire CHC community is invited to a number of special events surrounding my inauguration as the seventh president of Chestnut Hill College.

We have a wide range of exciting events: the return of the Katherine M. and William E. Schubert Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, September 27; Mass at the Motherhouse with the Sisters of Saint Joseph on Thursday, September 28; the formal Inauguration Ceremony and Reception on Friday, September 29. I hope to see you in person in the weeks ahead, and I look forward to sharing some images from the festivities in the next edition of From the President’s Desk.
