PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chestnut Hill College celebrated the new study abroad partnership with Pyeongtaek University in South Korea on January 16th with a reception that included remarks by Sister Carol Jean Vale, Ph.D., president of the College and Pyeongtaek University President, Cho Ki-Hung. The reception was sponsored by the Office of Global Education at the College.

As part of the new partnership, Chestnut Hill students will have the opportunity to participate in the summer language program at Pyeongtaek University that includes basic communication skills and experiential activities. Students will develop basic communication skills to increase confidence while speaking the basic Korean language with a focus on natural speech intonation, rhythm, and pronunciation.

Students will also learn various aspects of Korean culture such as politics, society, arts, crafts, sports, music, and food through specialized faculty lectures and field trips. Additional opportunities for students include participation in traditional Korean martial arts, farm visits, museum trips, and wearing traditional Korean clothing. Differences in non-verbal communications and social interactions will be explored through the trip.

Pyeongtaek University (PTU) is a prominent school of higher learning that was founded as Pierson Memorial Union Bible Institute in 1912. PTU was founded according to biblical values and principles, and established in the spirit of truth, justice, and service. Since its inception, the institution has changed its name to offer various programs in cooperation with the local community and businesses, such as social work, music, information and communication, education, business, and counseling. PTU is a specialized university that maintains exchange programs with schools overseas and provides opportunities in higher education to an increasing number of Korean and international students. Their efforts have been recognized by the Korean government, which named Pyeongtaek University a "School of Excellence" in its University Evaluation Report.
