Cancer Center Researcher to Deliver Lecture at Chestnut Hill College

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chestnut Hill College welcomes Jack Goldberg, M.D., F.A.C.P., who will deliver the lecture “E. Pluribus Unum: Leukemia from Patients to Bench and Back again,” for its 21st Annual Biomedical Distinguished Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 1, at 3:30 p.m., in the East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall.

Dr. Goldberg, clinical professor of medicine, and chief, division of hematology and medical oncology at the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, will talk about his research in hematopoietic stem cell biology and how it evolved into stem cell transplantation using peripheral blood and cord blood. He also will discuss the history of stem cell biology and cell culture models and how they are connected to leukemia treatments.

“Understanding the blood cancer is a great benefit to all. Dr. Goldberg’s lecture will shed light on leukemia and students will get the first-hand knowledge from an expert who has tremendous clinical experience dealing with the patients. Cancer awareness and early detection is the best way for cancer prevention and to reduce the cancer burden. In this regard, everyone in the College community will benefit from his lecture,” said Professor of Biology and Director of the Biomedical Lecture Series, Lakshmi Atchison, Ph.D.

Dr. Goldberg has clinical expertise in breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and prostate cancer and offers research expertise in geriatric oncology, palliative care including hospice, bone marrow transplantation and hematopoietic stem cell research.

Leukemia and lymphomas are cancers of the blood and lymphatic systems and American Cancer Society statistics from 2013 show these two cancers account for 128,000 new cases and 44,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.

The purpose of the Biomedical Lecture Series is to provide a forum at Chestnut Hill College to learn about recent advances in biomedical research, expose students and community members to prominent professionals in science and medicine, and foster meaningful interactions and collaborations among neighboring institutions.

This lecture is open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Lakshmi Atchison at 215.248.7159 or email at latchiso@chc.edu.
