Blessing of the New Food Pantry

Blessing of the New Food Pantry

February 15, 2019 - 2:30pm
Location:
Food Pantry (outside of Student Financial Services on the first floor of SJH)

We are happy to announce that, with the help of many CHC community members, the Sisters of Saint Joseph and some dear neighbors in St. Philip Parish, Lafayette Hill, we are ready to open a Food Pantry for members of our CHC community facing food insecurity. On Friday, we'll have an official opening and blessing of the pantry. All are welcome to attend!

Why do we need a Food Pantry?

We know that food insecurity is a growing challenge for many persons, including college students.  A recent study at 66 campuses revealed that 36% of students self-identified as food insecure, or not consistently having money for food.

Where is the pantry and how do I get help if I need food?

The pantry is located on the first floor of Saint Joseph Hall, right outside Student Financial Services, across from the blue elevator.

We hope to be able to post a weekly schedule of hours when the pantry will be open for those who need food.

In addition to “hosted” hours, you may send an email to Food@chc.edu any time and we will make arrangements for you to visit the pantry at a time that works for you.

Also, some offices will have access to pantry keys. We will post these locations on the door and on the automatic reply to food@chc.edu for your information.

How can I help?

We are looking for volunteers to “host” the pantry – to welcome visitors, help them get food, etc.  These volunteers can be students, alums, SSJ associates, faculty and staff-after-hours.

We are happy to accept donations of food – we will have a refrigerator, shelves and a freezer. We expect a weekly donation of frozen food from Wawa. We’ll soon share a list of needs and appropriate donations. We will also accept donations of time/service and financial contributions; check inside the pantry.

Once we have a sense of how many volunteers we have and your availability, we will post hours, probably on a week by week basis to start.

To donate your time, sign up at the pantry or email food@chc.edu

Thanks in advance to all who have expressed interest and support. All are welcome to share what we have!
