CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE DISTRIBUTES $1,113,425 IN 2ND HALF OF THIRD ROUND OF FUNDING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AFFECTED BY COVID-19

On May 11, 2021, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced a third round of funding would be distributed to colleges and universities to provide direct emergency cash grants to college students whose lives and educations have been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak. The funding was made available through the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act for postsecondary education. Emergency funds provided by ARP more than double the emergency relief aid available to students and institutions already authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) relief legislation. This funding is provided by the ARP’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF III), with a new formula requiring approximately half of the funding to be used by each institution to provide direct relief to students.

Using a formula based on student enrollment, Chestnut Hill College was awarded $2,226,450 to support students with demonstrated need facing significant financial challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The disbursements were designed to prioritize students with the greatest demonstrated need and ensure that funds are distributed as widely as possible. Chestnut Hill College distributed half of these funds ($1,113,425) in Fall 2021 and the other half ($1,113,425) in Spring 2022.

The funds were used by Chestnut Hill College to provide students with financial aid grants to be used for any component of the student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care) or child care. Students were allowed to apply the funds directly to their student accounts to cover the cost of attendance or receive the funds in a payment directly from the College.

In alignment with Department of Education recommendations, Chestnut Hill College distributed the 2nd half of third round of funds to federal aid applicants with the greatest identified need, i.e., those with an expected family contribution of $15,000 or less. More than 890 Chestnut Hill College students—split among undergraduates, graduate, and professional students—received funds under this program. Each eligible student received approximately $1,247.
