The Spiritual Exercises with Teilhard de Chardin

September 22, 2024
Online at 1pm EDT

Presenter: Agustin Udias, SJ, professor emeritus of Geophysics, Universidad Complutense, Madrid, a member of the European Academy and corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History

Respondent: Margie Thompson, SSJ, MFA, artist and spiritual director

For Teilhard, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius must be adapted to the new circumstances and desires of a world influenced by the progress of science and technology. With the help of passages from Teilhard’s retreat notes, Udias suggests new ways to implement Teilhard’s suggestions.

“Teilhard and the Future of Theology”

October 16, 2024

Daylesford Abbey
220 S Valley Rd
Paoli, PA 19301
Register here to attend in-person.
Register here to attend online via Zoom.

Over the past two centuries scientists have learned that the universe is a story still being told. The Jesuit geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin sees this cosmic story as a great drama of awakening. For many Christians and other religious people, the scientific discovery that the universe is still coming into being is a mere curiosity at best. For Teilhard, however, the new cosmology shakes up everything—not only in science but also in theology. How so? This lecture provides an introduction to what is implied for science and faith in the new picture of an awakening universe.

“Resting on the Future:
Theology for an Unfinished Universe”

October 17, 2024
Online and in-person at 7 pm EDT
Chestnut Hill College’s East Parlor
Philadelphia, PA 19118
Register to attend in-person.
Register to watch online on Zoom.

Contemporary controversies and crises in Christian thought, life, and worship today are rooted in conflicting assumptions about God, the universe, and the meaning of time. With the help of some ideas of Teilhard de Chardin, this presentation will outline how Christian faith in the future may be transformed and take on new meaning and vitality in the light of recent developments in science, especially in biology and cosmology.

The HSAD closely followed individuals from over 700 families until the end of their lives and is now following their children to determine the critical role of relationships in shaping our happiness and health. Dr. Marc Schulz will discuss why relationships are the foundation of a “good life” and the steps we can take to improve our relationships, health, and happiness.

Reading Groups

Teilhard’s The Human Phenomenon

This study group is led by Ernie Tamminga, PhD, trained Spiritual Director and Cross-Cultural Religious Studies specialist. It began on Tuesday, July 9 at 3:30pm ET and will continue on alternate Tuesdays “for as long as it takes.” Sessions will last 75 minutes each. Join us as we venture with Teilhard into a journey through cosmic and terrestrial evolution, toward what he called a “Point Omega” of awakening planetary consciousness awaiting us ahead. We will use Sarah Appleton-Weber’s 1999 translation, The Human Phenomenon. Our reading will be supplemented by videos and graphics from the presentation originally created by the Phenomenon of Man Project. There will be ample time for group discussion. Contact: ernietamminga@yahoo.com

Teilhard’s The Divine Milieu

This Fall, the Institute for Religion and Science at Chestnut Hill College and the American Teilhard Association plan to co-sponsor 2 monthly Reading Circles on Zoom. Both sessions will involve the same content. Monday meetings are at 6:30-8:00pm ET and the Wednesday sessions are at 2:00-3:30pm ET.

This Fall, we will be reading Part III of Teilhard’s The Divine Milieu. We will continue to use a Lectio Divina style, reading and discussing the material together slowly and thoughtfully.

Here are the dates and tentative topics for the next four months; page assignments to follow:

         October 21 and 23

         November 11 and 13

         December 9 and 11

         January 13 and 15

If you wish to join us and are not yet on the mailing list for the Institute for Religion and Science Reading Circle, please send an email to kduffy@chc.edustating your interest.

Teilhard Conversation Group

The Teilhard Conversation Group meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm ET. All are welcome. To join, please send an email request to Paula Guarnaccia at pguarnac@gmail.com

Discussions focus on the relevance of Teilhard’s writing today. We recognize that there is an evolving hunger for his illuminating perspective. Together we explore the ways his ideas of both science and spirituality offer a bridge to the present time. Our conversations are often deeply personal in that participants are invited to share their own experiences of Teilhard.

“Living in the Divine Milieu with Teilhard de Chardin”

With Andrew Del Rossi, ThD
October 22-24, 2024
Daylesford Abbey
Paoli, PA 19301
Register here.

“By means of all created things, without exception, the divine assails us, penetrates us, and moulds us. We imagined it as distant and inaccessible, whereas in fact we live steeped in its burning layers.” The Divine Milieu is a guide to the spiritual life by priest and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ. The goal of the text is to find a way to classify all the events of our lives to see how they all fit into the love of the Cosmic Christ. We will explore the text with a focus on how we can live more consciously of God’s presence within our lives and of our lives within God. We will gather for plenary sessions, small group breakout sessions, and socials. There will be free time for quiet reflection, enjoying the beautiful grounds of the Abbey, and opportunities to participate in the prayer life of the Norbertine community. While not necessary, it is recommended that participants acquire and familiarize themselves with The Divine Milieu. Check-in begins at 3pm on Tuesday. Meals included: Tuesday dinner, Wednesday breakfast, lunch, dinner, Check-out is on Thursday at 12pm. Commuter tickets include all meals.

A Zoom Presentation with the Art and Stories of Brother Mickey McGrath

Online at 7pm – 8:30pm EDT

Albert Einstein, an immigrant Jew who escaped Nazi Germany, witnessed first-hand the rampant racism of the United States and was vocal in his condemnation of it. His creative talents as a musician helped him nurture a deep and lasting friendship with Marian Anderson, the great African-American opera singer who suffered the effects of racism throughout her legendary life and career. Their brilliant mutual gifts of creativity and music helped them create a soul friendship that rose above and beyond the racist culture in which they lived.

“Evolution’s God? Teilhard de Chardin and the Varieties of Process Theology”

Lecture by Donald Wayne Viney, PhD
Professor of Philosophy
Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS

7:00 pm – 8:30 pm EST

Summary: In 1953, Teilhard asked, “Who at last will give evolution its God?” His own endeavor to answer that question often bears striking similarities to the process theism of his contemporaries, Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne. Yet, the differences can also be striking. All three are rightly classified as promoting versions of process theology, but they show by their divergences that process thought, especially process theism, is far from yielding a monolithic viewpoint on the theistic question.

Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Teilhard’s Death in NYC Easter 1955

In April of 2005 the American Teilhard Association, in collaboration with the French and British Teilhard Associations and other partnering institutions, begins a yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) in New York City. One of the leading thinkers of the 20th century, Teilhard integrated his scientific understanding of evolution with his religious understanding of the “divine milieu.” His vision of the human as part of a dynamic unfolding universe is expressed in his classic text, The Human Phenomenon. As an accomplished scientist and as a person of deep religious conviction, Teilhard was himself a pioneer in bridging religion and science. He was as well a visionary capable of imagining a viable and vibrant human future.

In advance of his time and in the midst of great turmoil Teilhard perceived an emerging global consciousness. This was consistent with his understanding of evolution that would unify the human spirit despite the disruptions of war and conflict evident in the first half of the 20th century. Though exiled from his native homeland and refused permission to publish The Human Phenomenon during his lifetime, Teilhard did not lose his humility or his zest for life. Teilhard’s life and thought provide a remarkable reflection on endurance that arises from meaningful work, a productive life, and an ever-deepening spiritual vision of reality. In addition to his multi-volume scientific work on paleontology completed during his lifetime, Teilhard’s religious writings were eventually published after his death in 1955. With his idea of human consciousness encircling the planet as the noosphere, Teilhard is also credited with anticipating the complex technological connection of human thought now evident in global communications and in the worldwide Internet. Moreover, his thinking regarding the unity of the human has influenced several key founders of the United Nations.

Agenda for April 8th symposium, “The Spirit of the Earth: Global Spirituality and Sustainable Development”
