Course Highlights

SOCIAL WELFARE POLICY (HSVC 356) - In this course, students analyze social welfare policies and practices in the United States and the role of public and private agencies in the delivery of services.  Special attention is given to welfare policy as it relates to the problems that confront urban America.  Pre-req: HSVC 105

SOCIAL INEQUALITY (SOCI/HSVC 201) - This course is a sociological analysis of structural social inequality. In this course, students discuss and critically analyze several major forms including class-based, racial, ethnic, and gender inequalities. Students read articles and listen to audio files and podcasts addressing various types of social inequality, with an emphasis on eliminating or minimizing these inequalities in society. The course assignments are designed to challenge students to recognize and understand the many levels of social inequality present in society, and how social structures and institutions reproduce and maintain them. At the end of the semester, student teams record and produce audio podcasts analyzing a form of social inequality in the city of Philadelphia.

HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT (HSVC 257) - This course explores human behavior in the social environment through the lens of a systems theory framework and practice.  Students will assess and evaluate how individuals function within families, groups, organizations, institutions, and communities during the key stages of the human lifespan.  Developmental milestones and environmental issues will be explored with particular focus given to human diversity and populations at risk through vignettes and case examples.
