Tichenor-Greer Scholars Program

The Tichenor-Greer Scholars program recognizes talented students who are interested in pursuing majors and careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and who are from populations traditionally underrepresented in STEM Fields (African-American, Latinx, and/or Native American/Indigenous American) and demonstrate a financial need.

Through a generous gift From Patricia Tichenor-Greer (’62), Ph. D. and Carl Greer, Ph. D., selected students are awarded a scholarship, a book stipend, as well as a cadre of intensive support services during the school year through the Academic Support Program.

Each year a cohort of up to 25 first-year students who intend to earn a bachelor’s degree in one of the following STEM majors at Chestnut Hill College listed below are selected to be Tichenor-Greer Scholars:

The Academic Support program takes place over the course of the academic year (August – May) each year.  This program provides the Tichenor-Greer Scholars with additional support systems, early interventions and  to increase student success.

The Academic Support program takes a three-pronged approach to support students and facilitate success.  The three components include:

    1. Academic Support – Each Tichenor-Greer Scholar will receive incentive-based tutoring sessions and work with members of the Office of Student Success to build a personalized student success plan and attend workshops that support their continued academic success.
    2. Extracurricular Involvement – Studies show that when students feel connected to their college and classmates, they are more likely to persist through graduation.  The Scholars will participate in incentive-based study groups and attend workshops that focus on student success, study skills, and time management.  Scholars will also be mentored by a successful upper-level classmate and will engage in cohort activities that will connect them to their peers.  In addition, students will be encouraged to complete summer research and/or internships or co-ops in their chosen field.
    3. Service Learning – Each Scholar participates in a service project during the academic year at the College or at locations throughout the community, such as the Villa, a home for retired Sisters of Saint Joseph, the Welcome Center in the Kensington neighborhood, or local middle or high schools.

Through the involvement in these supporting services and activities, first-year Tichenor-Greer Scholars have a smoother transition to college and developed the skills necessary to successfully complete a STEM degree at Chestnut Hill College.
