Course Highlights

INSIDE OUT PRISON EXCHANGE PROGRAM (CRJU 245) - The Inside Out Prison Exchange program is a unique experiential education class where students learn about the criminal justice system through dialogue.  The class will meet inside a prison.  The class will be comprised of both CHC students and members of the incarcerated community.  Students will read, discuss, and solve problems together.  Weekly and cumulative writings are required.

CRIMINOLOGY (CRJU 321) - Students will gain a general understanding of the nature of criminal behavior from both the classical and the determinist schools.  Theories and research focusing on the individual causes and social and environmental determinants will also be explored.  The theories are placed against a backdrop of the pendulum swing between punishment and rehabilitation that has guided penal philosophy since inception.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE (CRJU 325) - A seminar introducing the student to the philosophy, history, theory, and practice of Restorative Justice (RJ) in the US criminal and international justice systems.  Restorative justice is an emerging movement for reform that emphasizes repairing harm to victims and reintegration of offenders in the community.  Many jurisdictions have incorporated aspects of RJ in their juvenile and adult justice systems.  As well, nations such as South Africa, Rwanda and Peru have embraced RJ as a means of hearing communities affected by crimes against humanity.  The course examines the practices, programs, realities, and controversies of RJ.
