Laboratory Manager (10 Months, Full-time)

Chestnut Hill College (CHC) seeks a Laboratory Manager to join the Center for Natural and Behavioral Sciences. This is a full-time, ten-month staff position with administrative responsibilities and laboratory teaching duties.

The Laboratory Manager works under the direction of the Center Chair and the Chair of Chemistry to teach undergraduate general chemistry laboratories (up to nine contact hours per semester), support faculty in preparing laboratory materials, and oversee day-to-day laboratory operations. The role supports laboratory activities in both chemistry and biology and plays an important role in providing students with a safe, engaging, and well-equipped laboratory learning environment.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for early-career scientists or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in laboratory management, teaching, and instrumentation within a supportive undergraduate academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate general chemistry laboratory sections (up to nine contact hours per semester).
  • Prepare chemicals, materials, and laboratory setups to support undergraduate laboratory instruction in chemistry and biology.
  • Manage laboratory chemical and supply inventories, including sourcing and purchasing chemicals and equipment within budget guidelines.
  • Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS/MSDS) and ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and regulations.
  • Coordinate chemical and biohazard waste management, including conducting weekly inspections of satellite waste locations in Chemistry and Biology laboratories.
  • Supervise student employees to support laboratory organization, safety standards, and general cleanliness.
  • Provide oversight for adjunct instructors supporting chemistry laboratories, as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, including pH probes, portable spectrophotometers, automatic pipettes, and microscopes.
  • After appropriate training from teaching faculty, operate analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, and fluorescence spectrophotometers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related scientific field required.
  • Laboratory experience through coursework, research, internships, or employment required; approximately one year of hands-on laboratory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with safe laboratory practices and applicable state and federal regulations governing chemical use, storage, and disposal.
  • Undergraduate laboratory teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience handling and packaging biohazard waste preferred.
  • Previous experience as an undergraduate laboratory manager or laboratory assistant preferred.
