Roger Bacon, philosopher and inventor, once said, "For all things of this world cannot be made known without a knowledge of mathematics." Bacon's quote rings true as mathematics, one of the oldest and most fundamental of sciences, supports understanding and interpreting a variety of things, from simple to complex. One who studies mathematics, especially at Chestnut Hill College, will graduate with the ability to reason logically, to analyze and solve problems, to think abstractly, and to express ideas clearly and precisely--all skills useful for and beyond a mathematics degree.
Why Study Mathematics at CHC?
Students receive a solid background in both theoretical and applied mathematics, while also developing depth and preciseness, as required for this course of study. However, as a Math major at CHC you will learn more than theorems and algorithms. You will be exposed to the world of mathematics through a student-centered approach through small classes, an interactive learning environment and individual attention from faculty. Student interests are considered in planning courses.
Along with classroom instruction from highly qualified, experienced professors, students receive a well-rounded liberal arts education that helps them think for themselves and include ethical perspectives in their career decisions. Mathematics students graduate with a deep appreciation for the power and beauty of mathematics and the career possibilities that accompany their degree.
Student Activities:
Honors are offered within this major. Outstanding students with a high scholastic standing may be invited in their sophomore year to stand for honors in junior and senior years.
The program also provides the opportunity for independent study and research, culminating in an honors thesis submitted in the spring of senior year. Students who successfully complete this program will be recognized with honors at graduation and have the title of their thesis printed on their academic transcripts.
Students who qualify with a major and career GPA of 3.0/4.0 and who have completed 25 semester hours including 15 semester hours in mathematics, may be invited to join Sigma Zeta, the National Science and Mathematics Honor Society.

Career Outlook
"Do math and you can do anything" is the message from the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics (NCTM). The range of career paths available to mathematically trained individuals is broad because mathematics majors acquire excellent logical, analytic and technical skills that are highly valued by employers.
The CHC curriculum also provides a strong foundation for those interested in graduate studies in mathematics or other professional degree programs such as law, medicine, business.

Internships:
Chestnut Hill College is located in Philadelphia, near many insurance companies, financial institutions, hospitals, schools, private industries and businesses. This increases the opportunities for mathematics majors to gain valuable “real-world” experience through carefully chosen internships. While not mandatory for mathematics majors, internships are always encouraged.
