The Great Sports Myth is the idea that sports are inherently good and apolitical, but everyday it seems a new controversy arises in sports from the World Cup in Qatar to the hiring practices of coaches in the NFL. Media conglomerates are paying billions of dollars a year for the right to broadcast or stream sporting events live, but many of their networks like ESPN are conflicted as they try to profit from their investment. Sponsors and advertisers want to reach large audiences, which may be undermined by critical reporting that could lead fans to question the morality of consuming certain sports leagues. This leads media outlets to support the Myth particularly around major events like the World Cup, The Olympics, and the Super Bowl. As sports media rights continue to skyrocket, what is the future of objective sports reporting?
