Music Department Brings Pirates of Penzance to Chestnut Hill College

The Chestnut Hill College Music Department presents the William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan classic musical, “The Pirates of Penzance,” Friday through Sunday, March 27-29, at the College’s Motherhouse Auditorium. There will be four shows starting with Friday’s show on March 27 at 8 p.m., two shows on Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and a matinee on Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m.

“The Pirates of Penzance” is about the young pirate apprentice named Frederic, who comes to the end of his indentured period, only to find out he was indentured by mistake. Frederick decides to leave the pirate life forever even though he loves his comrades and now will devote his life to the extermination of their kind. On his final day as a pirate, he feels obliged to point out the pirates’ weakness, which is being too softhearted. Essentially, all captives must do is plead to being orphans and they are released.

Complications, however, arise when Frederic falls in love with Mabel, the first woman he’s ever seen in his life besides his old nurse. Frederic faces further complications when he finds out due to a technicality that he is still indentured to the pirates.

The musical’s primary roles are played by Michael Yancey ’15 as the Pirate King, Brian Langdon ’16 as Frederic, Michelle Hildebrandt ’14 as Ruth, Thomas Morgan ’17 as Samuel, Caroline Oddo ’15 as Mabel, Brandon Rothenberg as Major General Stanley, Penelope Pucci ’16 as Edith, Gabrielle Sciortino ’17 as Isabel, Jackie Blade ’16 as Kate and Asia Bryant ’15 as Sergeant of Police. The play is directed by Randy Young and Kayla Harney ’16, serving as student director.

“The Pirates of Penzance” originally opened on Fifth Avenue in New York City on December 31, 1879 and has been produced many times over the years including a Broadway revival in the early 1980s with Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt.

Tickets cost $12 for general admission and $5 for seniors, children and students. Call 215.753.3707 for tickets or more information.
