Lawrence Little, Ph.D., to Speak at Chestnut Hill College on Catholic Social Teachings and Racism

Returning to CHC for the second consecutive year, author and professor, Lawrence Little, Ph.D., will present the lecture, “Catholic Social Teachings and Racism” Monday, February 27, at 7 p.m. in the East Parlor of St. Joseph Hall.

The lecture is sponsored by the History Department to commemorate Black History Month, and will examine racism and capitalism and the historic underdevelopment of the working poor in American society. Strategies from Catholic Social Teachings that can help to improve race relations also will be discussed. 

Dr. Little is an Associate Professor of African American History at Villanova University, where he has taught since 1993. His teaching areas include: African-American History, American History, Racism and Race Relations, Civil Rights, the U.S. Constitution and Global History.

Little has been published in several academic journals including The North Star, The Journal of Asian and African Studies and The Western Journal of Black Studies.

His book, “Disciples of Liberty: The African Methodist Church in the Age of Imperialism, 1884-1916,” examines African-American reactions to global events and issues at the turn of the 20th entury.

Little, a Vietnam-era veteran who served four years in the U.S. Air Force, received his undergraduate degree from Coppin State College in Baltimore, Md., and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in American History from Ohio State University.
