Harry Potter Weekend Returns to CHC on Oct. 16-17

Philadelphia, PA- In conjunction with the Harry Potter Festival in Chestnut Hill, Chestnut Hill College will hold its annual Harry Potter Conference, Philadelphia Brotherly Love Cup Quidditch Tournament and Wizard Rock Concert from October 16-17.

 

  • Oct. 16, 8:30 a.m., Harry Potter Conference: The Harry Potter Conference is an annual, interdisciplinary academic conference held at Chestnut Hill College that provides a forum for scholarly presentations arising out of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

The College will be welcoming three plenary speakers. Loris Vezzali, professor at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, who will join the conference via Skype. He has contributed to “The Greatest Magic of Harry Potter: Reducing Prejudice” in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology (2015). The College will also welcome Karin Westman, associate professor of English at Kansas State University. Westman will share her publication: “Blending Genres and Crossing Audiences: Harry Potter and the Future of Literary Fiction.” The final plenary speaker will be Maria Tatar Ph.D., the John Loeb professor of Germanic languages and literatures, and chair of the Committee on Degrees in Folklore and Mythology at Harvard University.

In addition to the lectures, Chestnut Hill College will offer two $10,000 scholarships and one $15,000 scholarship to the students who submit winning essays to the 2015 Harry Potter Conference High School Student Section. The scholarship is applicable to Chestnut Hill College School of Undergraduate Studies and will be awarded each year for four years of full-time enrollment. The award is contingent upon the student’s application and acceptance to Chestnut Hill College.

  • Oct. 17, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Brotherly Love Cup Quidditch Tournament: Looking to defend the title of Philadelphia Brotherly Love Cup Champions, Chestnut Hill College will host its Sixth Annual Brotherly Love Quidditch Tournament on October 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The College will host seven outside Quidditch teams across the Mid-Atlantic in a round robin style tournament. “Muggle” Quidditch is a fast-paced, action-packed game that is cross between dodgeball, basketball and rugby. It features broomsticks, snitches and bludgers, just like the game made famous in J.K. Rowlings books.

Chestnut Hill College is sponsoring a shuttle that will run from the College to the Harry Potter Weekend event taking place simultaneously in Chestnut Hill, and back. Parking at the College is discouraged because it extremely limited. Seating for the tournament is also limited, so bringing blankets or chairs to watch the matches is encouraged.

  • Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m., Wizard Rock Concert: Harry Potter fans will also have the opportunity to attend the College’s Second Annual Wizard Rock Concert. The concert will feature bands such as Harry and the Potters, and The Nargeleptics.

Doors to the concert will open at 7 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Wizard Rock Concert will take place in the Griffin’s Den in the basement of the College. (This is subject to change depending on the number of ticket sales.)
