Chestnut Hill College will be on hand to support the Fifth Annual Philadelphia Science Week Festival, scheduled to take place April 24 through May 2.

Philadelphia Science Week is a citywide event sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company and organized by Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute that “aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and create homegrown citizen scientists, by exploring the many ways that science and technology touch our everyday lives.”

Chestnut Hill College will participate in two Science Week events: Astronomy Night and Discovery Day, both scheduled to be held at the Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences located in Chestnut Hill.

Astronomy Night is Friday, April 24, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (rain date is Friday, May 1, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.), and Discovery Day is Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Faculty members from the College’s science department, Elliot Tammaro, assistant professor of physics, and adjunct professors’ Len Jensen and Mike Atwell will be on hand for Astronomy Night. Former CHC adjunct professor, Al Lamperti will also participate. Attendees will be guided in the star gazing where planets such as Jupiter, and its four moons, and Mars will be identified. Further into the evening, as it gets darker, constellations such as Leo (the Lion), Gemini (the Twins) and Ursa Major, which is the most obvious and brightest part of the Big Dipper, will be pointed out. IN addition, Castor and Pollux, the “head” stars of each of the Gemini Twins, Regulus, the brightest star within Leo and Procyon, the brightest star in Canis Minor, will be located as well as Polaris, or the North Star.

Dr. Joseph Kulkosky, chair of the College’s biology department will be on hand for Discovery Day on Saturday, April 25, and will discuss the variety of available science programs at the College as well as the Forensic Sciences Summer Camp for middle and high school students that takes place this summer. The dates for the camp are shown below.

High school:  July 13-17, July 20-24 and July 27-31
Middle school: August 3-7 and August 10-14
