Chestnut Hill College to Host Seminar on Seeing One Another Through the Eyes of the Heart

Chestnut Hill College to Host Seminar on Seeing One Another Through the Eyes of the Heart

Chestnut Hill College’s Institute for Forgiveness and Reconciliation will sponsor the seminar “Facing Another: The Gift and Challenge of an Encounter” Saturday, November 22, at SugarLoaf Hill, Commonwealth Chateau, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This all-day seminar will invite participants to reflect on, learn about and question – “the power of the face” to call forth in those who “see” new revelations about themselves, as well as the one being seen.

“The day’s workshops will provide awareness of potential blocks that keep us from seeing others as God’s beloved, from seeing all life as interconnected, and will give us some of the skills we need to help do that better,” said theologian Catherine T. Nerney, SSJ, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Forgiveness and Reconciliation.

Sister Catherine said one goal of the seminar is to free us from deadly pre-judgments or stereotypes, and to encourage people to see one another with eyes that are appreciative and respectful, less fearful of the core relationship that binds us together and makes us responsible for one another. She says the gift and challenge of every encounter is to recognize in every face we meet, another human being, inviting us to “see” them and call them forth to become.

In reflecting on what people might gain from this day, Sister Catherine added, “It is my hope that we strengthen our innate capacity to recognize ourselves in the other. Every face I meet has the potential to reveal me to myself through a deeper discovery of the other, as one like me, though not me. In sum, the day is designed to make ever more concrete and practical the core reality that all is one.”

The day will feature the keynote address, “The Human Face as Icon: A Practical Philosophical and Theological Perspective,” delivered by Sister Catherine and various workshops throughout the day given by the College’s faculty, students and others.

The seminar fee is $10. Email forgive@chc.edu for call 215.248.7099 to register or get more information.
