Chestnut Hill College to Host Professor of Christian Philosophy

Philadelphia, PA- Chestnut Hill College’s Institute for Religion and Science will host Nancey Murphy, Ph.D., who will deliver the lecture “Do Humans have Minds? Neuroscientific and Biblical Issues” on Thursday, September 22, at 7 p.m., at the Commonwealth Chateau, SugarLoaf Campus.

In her lecture, Murphy will look at the theology of human nature and critical points in history when science influenced these views. The major emphasis will be to illustrate the many ways neuroscience is calling body-soul or body-mind dualism into question, and promoting a physicalist account — describing humans as purely physical organisms. However, the claim that we are composed of matter must not be taken to imply that higher human faculties are simply determined by material laws.

“As science continues to pursue research into the intricate functioning of the brain, theological reflection on the wonders of these discoveries is a must,” says Kathleen Duffy, SSJ, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Religion and Science. “Dr. Murphy brings a both thoughtful and fruitful perspective to this challenge.”

Nancey Murphy joined the Fuller faculty in 1989 and now serves as professor of Christian philosophy. She is highly sought as a speaker at national and international conferences on philosophy and the relationship between theology and science. Murphy serves on the board of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, Berkeley, and is a member of the Planning Committee for conferences on science and theology sponsored by the Vatican Observatory.

Murphy has published numerous articles in journals of theology, philosophy, and science. Her first book, Theology in the Age of Scientific Reasoning, received awards from the Templeton Foundation and the American Academy of Religion.

Murphy serves as an editorial advisor for numerous publishers and journals. She is an adjunct professor at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague, and is an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren.
