Philadelphia, PA- Chestnut Hill College’s Institute for Religion and Sciences welcomes Marc Schulz, Ph.D., Rachel C. Hale professor in Science and Mathematics, at Bryn Mawr College to deliver the lecture titled “Science of Mindfulness: What We Know and Don’t Know,” on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., at Chestnut Hill College’s SugarLoaf Campus.

According to Dr. Schulz, meditation and other mindfulness practices are growing in popularity in contemporary American popular culture. Ever widening circles of people are becoming interested in the benefits that mindfulness can offer in stress-relief, well-being and physical health.

Dr. Schulz is the author of numerous publications and is a co-editor of two books. In his research, he studies emotion processes, close relationships, and change across time in individuals and families. He is a senior investigator for the Study of Adult Development, a 70-year old longitudinal study of individuals and families, based at Harvard University. Dr. Schulz is trained as a clinical psychologist, and regularly teaches a class on mindfulness at Bryn Mawr College.

His lecture will highlight modern conceptualization and implementation of mindfulness practices that have arisen in the West and review scientific research that examines the potential health benefits of these practices.

“This year, the Institute for Religion and Science at Chestnut Hill College has chosen the theme, ‘Human Flourishing’,” says Kathleen Duffy SSJ, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Religion and Science. “Hoping to explore this theme from a variety of aspects, we have invited Dr. Marc Schulz to share with us the history and practice of mindfulness, a practice that many see as the path to true and lasting happiness and freedom from all suffering.”

This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathleen Duffy, SSJ, Ph.D. at 215.248.7197 or kduffy@chc.edu.
