Reading Specialist


Chestnut Hill College (CHC) seeks a Reading Specialist to join the College’s Disability Resource Center. This is a full-time, 12-month staff position.  Founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, CHC is an independent, Catholic institution that fosters excellence by providing a holistic education within a strong liberal arts tradition.  The mission of the college is dedicated to serving the Dear Neighbor--student, faculty, staff, the surrounding community, and our global neighbors--without distinction. 

Reporting to the Director of the Disability Resource Center (DRC), the Reading Specialist works individually and with small groups of college students to provide reading support and tutoring.  This position works closely with the DRC, academic advising, other academic support staff, and faculty to provide student reading assistance for academic readiness in course work.  The Reading Specialist assists students in developing college-level reading skills, reading preparation, and comprehension.

  • At least three years of classroom teaching or educational support services in reading or tutoring.
  • Master’s degree (Reading Specialist) from an accredited university.
  • Experience in teaching and/or educational support.
  • Knowledge of best educational practices in reading education.
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction techniques.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work with DRC Director and other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods for the position. Work closely with faculty and respond to referrals of students who are at risk for reading problems.
  • Schedule tutoring sessions with students. Conduct follow-ups.
  • Plan, order, and use appropriate licensing for assistive learning technology, instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment.
  • Understand the learning styles and needs of students served.
  • Use technology appropriately to strengthen the learning process. Apprise CHC IT department of any needs.
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Maintain a current level of literacy knowledge and evidence-based educational practices.
  • Where appropriate, provide feedback and follow up to faculty, academic advising, and other academic support staff regarding students referred to the DRC.
  • Schedule rooms for designated reading support meetings. 
  • As needed, suggest modifications/additions to the Director of the Disability Resource Center for each student’s Accommodation Plan throughout the semester.
