In response to current events, museums across the country are contemplating their interpretation around guns and violent historic events. Revolutionary Germantown Partners Cliveden and PhilaLandmarks will hold community conversations around the national debate about gun control and everyday violence, looking to history as an anchor.

The program series includes two Cliveden Conversations, the first one being held on Friday, September 21st. Dr. Jessica Roney, author of the book, Governed by a Spirit of Opposition: The Origins of American Political Practice in Colonial Philadelphia, will give a presentation at the conversation, discussing the historical context of the American Revolution. After the presentation, community members will discuss how historic events and lived experiences impact life today, aided by local facilitator Patricia Scott Hobbes.

In addition to the conversations, there will be an installation in Cliveden's Carriage House Visitor's Center that will focus on firearms as well as a free-response activity both during the Revolutionary Germantown Festival and through the fall.

The September 21st Cliveden Conversation will be held at Cliveden in our Carriage House, which is located on the corner of Cliveden and Morton Streets and is wheelchair accessible.

*Our next conversation will be held on Friday, October 19th and features a presentation by Dr. David Waldstreicher, History Professor at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and will be hosted at Historic Germantown (5501 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia,
PA 19144).
