"From Down but Determined to Doctor: A Phenomenological View of Doctoral Students in an All-But-Dissertation Completion Program"

Dr. Lisa A. Dunkle, our literacy specialist, will be sharing the research and findings from her dissertation research.  She interviewed sixteen participants and asked them to share their lived experiences as doctoral students in an ABD completion program to inform the higher education community about the needs of doctoral students during the dissertation phase and to positively impact practices and attrition rates.  The participants answered questions related to what happened in their intial programs, how they felt about their inability to complete their dissertations in those programs, what made them want to try again, how they came to choose their current program, and how their work is proceeding in their new program.  Seven themes were revealed that demonstrated a commonality among their experiences.  As of today, twelve of the sixteen participants have successfully completed their dissertations and graduated.

Faculty in attendance will gain an understanding of an experience either very like or very unlike their own and be able to employ findings from the presented research to their current practices and programs.
