Mathematical Sciences

The Mathematical Sciences curriculum is designed to develop the analytic skills required for an understanding and efficient use of mathematics.  Courses involve an interplay of theory and application.  Computer and graphing calculators are integrated into the courses, and emphasis is placed on the development of problem-solving skills.  Students are prepared for graduate study in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and operations research; for positions in business and industry; for an actuarial career; and for teaching of mathematics from early childhood through secondary school.

There are two variations of the mathematics major: Mathematical Sciences or Computer and Mathematical Sciences.   Both programs provide the students with a thorough grounding in mathematics, while providing enough flexibility for the student to decide on the amount of emphasis to be given to computer science.

Mathematical Proficiency Requirement:
Every student must demonstrate the attainment of reasonable proficiency in mathematics.   Incoming students will take a proficiency exam, and the results will determine whether the student has attained the required level or will enter a developmental program and take the test again upon completing the program.
