Institute for Religion and Science Lecture: Red Dwarf Stars and Little Green People?

Scott Engle, Ph.D of Villanova University and Rev. Frank Haig, S.J., Ph.D., professor emeritus of Loyola University in Maryland will present the lecture, “Red Dwarf Stars and Little Green People?” on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. at the Commonwealth Chateau, SugarLoaf campus at Chestnut Hill College. This lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Religion and Science at Chestnut Hill College.

Are we alone? The question of whether or not Red Dwarfs can support habitable (life-bearing) planets is becoming a profound one, especially given how numerous they are. This program will present recent research on Red Dwarf Stars and their planets, ponder the question of what difference extraterrestrial life would make for humanity.

Catholic Eucharistic Liturgy

All Are Welcome! We welcome students of all faiths who wish to join us in Catholic Eucharistic Liturgy. Students are welcome to train or serve as lectors, Eucharistic Ministers (Catholic, trained students only), musicians, etc. Training will be provided for anyone who desires to be a Lector or Eucharistic Minister. More information may be obtained in the Campus Ministry Offices. Mass is celebrated each day at 11:45 am. Sunday liturgies are celebrated on days the college is in session. Sundays that fall on a college break or holiday, mass will not be on campus but many local parishes have several schedules that are amenable to students.

  Chestnut Hill College will hold its 31st Annual Golf Invitational on Monday, October 14th at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
 
For three decades, the Chestnut Hill College Golf Invitational has played host to hundreds of the region's top business associates and community leaders. In that time, the Invitational has raised nearly $1 million in support of Chestnut Hill College. The day provides an excellent opportunity for professional networking while supporting some of Chestnut Hill’s brightest scholar-athletes.
 
Back after a successful first year, the invitational will also include Party Bridge at 2:30 p.m. at the country club. Participants can register for the bridge game, with the option of staying for cocktails and dinner with the golfers.

Chestnut Hill College will host an academic conference on “Harry Potter: Reflections on the Major Themes in J.K. Rowling's Literature" on Friday, October 18, from 3-5 p.m. in the Rotunda, St. Joseph Hall.

The conference is an academic outlet for students, faculty and other scholars to present papers/research related to the “Harry Potter book series. This conference brings a scholarly component to the Harry Potter Weekend and the 4th Annual Philadelphia Brotherly Love Quidditch Cup Tournament.

Guest Lecturer To Discuss Children’s Hospital Experiences from 1850-1950

Dr. Mary Clare Martin, head of the Centre for the Study of Play and Recreation and principal lecturer/program leader of childhood studies at the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom will discuss “Children’s Experiences of Hospital, 1850-1950: Philadelphia, London, Toronto, Melbourne” on Monday, October 21st at 2:15 p.m. in the Redmond Room.

This lecture will explore children’s experiences of hospital between 1850 and 1950, with particular reference to some of the earliest foundations in the English-speaking world, notably, Philadelphia, London, Toronto and Melbourne. The provision of separate hospitals for children has been perceived as recognition of childhood as a separate stage of life, acknowledging that children had different needs from adults.

Soldiers Project Pennsylvania to Host Clinician Training on Trauma

Chestnut Hill College will host a workshop on trauma for The Soldiers Project Pennsylvania on Thursday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall.

This workshop will guide participants in their overall understanding of basic principles of psychotherapy with trauma survivors and the application of a stage-based mode. Techniques and tools for intervening with trauma survivors will be emphasized. Therapist self-care will also be addressed. Susan McGroarty, Ph.D. ABPP, assistant professor of psychology at Chestnut Hill College will conduct the training.
 
There is a $25.00 charge for those attending who are not members of The Soldiers Project PA, with or without CEUs. Registration is required and payment can be made at the door. Please email Sister Nancy DeCesare, Ph.D. at decesaren@chc.edu to register.
