Monday, October 21, 2013 2:15 PM
Dr. Mary Clare Martin, head of the Centre for the Study of Play and Recreation and principal lecturer/program leader of childhood studies at the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom will discuss “Children’s Experiences of Hospital, 1850-1950: Philadelphia, London, Toronto, Melbourne” on Monday, October 21st at 2:15 p.m. in the Redmond Room.
This lecture will explore children’s experiences of hospital between 1850 and 1950, with particular reference to some of the earliest foundations in the English-speaking world, notably, Philadelphia, London, Toronto and Melbourne. The provision of separate hospitals for children has been perceived as recognition of childhood as a separate stage of life, acknowledging that children had different needs from adults.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Suzanne Conway, associate professor of art history at 215.248.7183
