Mathematical and Computer Sciences

Program Information

At Chestnut Hill College, in addition to offering majors in Mathematics and Computer and Information Sciences, students are afforded the unique opportunity to study both in the form of the hybrid Mathematical & Computer Sciences major. This program, which provides students a thorough grounding in mathematics as well as algorithms and implementations involved in computer science, helps an individual develop skills to allow them to reason logically, analyze and solve problems, think abstractly and express thoughts clearly and precisely. In addition, the major combines two fields in very high demand, making one very employable and providing for an exciting field of study.

Internships

Chestnut Hill College is located in Philadelphia, near many insurance companies, financial institutions, hospitals, schools, private industries and businesses. This increases the opportunities for Mathematical & Computer Sciences students to gain valuable real-world experience through special internships. In fact, it's not uncommon for an internship to lead to full-time employment after graduation.

Some of our Mathematical & Computer Sciences majors have held internships at the following companies and organizations:

  • Computer Science Corporation
  • ICON Clinical Research
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolence
  • USDA
After Graduation

You will become a problem solver. You will learn to think creatively, apply your skills to new problems and work cooperatively with others. We will prepare you for positions in business and industry, and for graduate school in mathematics, statistics, applied mathematics and computer science.

You might use your knowledge of mathematics and computer science to solve practical problems in business, government, financial institutions, engineering, or in the physical, life and social sciences. In that case, you'll be glad to have the computer background, because most complex mathematical computation and much mathematical modeling is done on a computer. You might want to work in the computer field and be part of the continuing technology revolution. Or you might choose education; the need for qualified math teachers is growing. A degree in Mathematical and Computer Sciences can prepare you to be an:

  • Actuary
  • Computer Programmer
  • Software Developer
  • Systems Analyst
  • Statistician
  • Systems Engineer
  • Teacher
