Math Center

We strive to make the services of the Math Center available to as many students as possible, providing a friendly, non-intimidating atmosphere of learning that responds to the individual strengths and needs of each student.

The Math Center is a free resource for students seeking help with their Math or Math-related course. The Center (on the 3rd floor of SJH) is staffed by teachers and student-tutors. The Center follows the SUS Academic Calendar and is open

  • 9:00am- 5:00pm on Monday and Friday,
  • 9:00am- 6:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
  • 11:00am – 2:00pm on Saturday.
  • Any exceptions or changes will be displayed on hallway screens.

Tutoring – Individual or Group

Students requesting tutoring may make an appointment by calling 215-248-7088, emailing or stopping in when the Center is open. When crowding necessitates, those with appointments will be given preference over students who do not. Students may request either a 30 minute or 50 minute session.

Tutoring is a joint effort. To benefit fully, students should come with specific questions that they encountered when doing assignments on their own. Those coming to catch up after an absence will profit by reading the sections they missed. Tutors are instructed not to work only on the problems assigned to the student, but on parallel examples of similar skills.

Tutoring is most beneficial when the student practices what was learned before extended time lapses. It is better to practice 20 minutes a day, rather than cram immediately before a test.

When plans change, the students are asked to call the Center to cancel or change their appointments. If students fail to do so, they deprive someone else of tutoring time, and so will lose their tutoring privileges for one week.

In addition to individual and small group tutoring, the Center houses software programs, math Websites, books, and practice worksheets for student use.

For help when the Center is closed, go to ( and use your textbook’s chapter and section title to locate the videos on your topic.

Testing Schedule and Registration Information

Placement/ Proficiency tests are required of all students in Undergraduate (SUS) and Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) and are administered in the Math Center. These computerized tests measure skills needed for college-level coursework and may determine that a student is required to take an appropriate developmental course.

Tests will be administered one weekend each month at specified times: Friday 1:00-8:00pm; Saturday 11:00am-2:00pm; Monday 9:00am-11:00am. Consult this semester’s schedule

Call the Math Center at 215-248-7088, e-mail, or visit the Math Center to make an appointment to take the test.

There is no cost for the first test for students in SUS and SCPS. The cost for re-taking a test is $5.00 per test.

SUS - Results and placement will be posted on Blackboard.
